Conditional Sentences – Type 2 and Type 3
🔹 CONDITIONAL TYPE 2
Structure:
If + Simple Past → would + base form
Used to talk about hypothetical situations in the present or future.
Examples (Italian → English)
Se fossi più paziente, riusciresti meglio nel tuo lavoro. If I were more patient, you would do better in your job.
Se avessi più tempo, leggerei di più. If I had more time, I would read more.
Se studiassi con costanza, imparerei più rapidamente. If you studied regularly, you would learn more quickly.
Se parlassi meglio l’inglese, viaggerei di più. If I spoke English better, I would travel more.
Se sapessi cucinare, preparerei cene speciali ogni sera. If I could cook, I would prepare special dinners every evening.
Se vivessi al mare, farei il bagno ogni giorno. If I lived by the sea, I would swim every day.
Se avessi una macchina sportiva, la guiderei ogni weekend. If I had a sports car, I would drive it every weekend.

🔹 CONDITIONAL TYPE 3
Structure:
If + Past Perfect → would have + past participle
Used to talk about unreal situations in the past (regrets, missed opportunities).
Examples (Italian → English)
Se avessi studiato di più, avrei passato l’esame. If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.
Se fossi arrivato in tempo, avremmo preso il treno. If I had arrived on time, we would have caught the train.
Se l’avessi saputo prima, ti avrei avvertito. If I had known earlier, I would have warned you.
Se fossimo stati più attenti, non avremmo commesso errori. If we had been more careful, we wouldn’t have made mistakes.
Se mi avessi chiamato, sarei venuto ad aiutarti. If you had called me, I would have come to help you.
Se avessi risparmiato, avrei comprato quella casa. If I had saved money, I would have bought that house.
Se fossi stato più gentile, avresti avuto più amici. If you had been kinder, you would have had more friends.
